First Grade Friday News - August 30


Chapel offerings for the first few weeks will go to support Lisbeth, our Compassion International student in Guatemala.  Our offerings will help Lisbeth’s family with food, clothing, and education expenses.

We need packets of seeds (flower or vegetable) for a Nature Club project.  It’s fine if they are expired or already opened packets.  Don’t send more than one packet per child.  We need these by September 11.  Thank you.

Dates to remember:
Mon., Sep. 2                 Labor Day, no school
Fri., Sep.6                    Dismiss at 1:30
Tues., Sep. 10               Back to School Night (We will begin with a PALS meeting in the sanctuary at 6:30.  Following the PALS meeting, you will come to our classroom.  Bring your questions about first grade.)
Thurs., Sep. 26             Field trip to pumpkin patch (Let me know if you can drive.  So far, we have one driver. Cost for parents is $5.)

Spelling words: in, pin, pig, wig, win, fin, am, pan, yes, and
Religion:  Abraham
Reading skill:  Details, short i words
Math:  Introducing addition and subtraction stories
Language/Writing:  Handwriting upper and lower case letters
Science:  Our Bodies
Nature Club:  Plant parts

 

E         Each Friday is “CLS shirt day”.  Any CLS shirt may be worn on Fridays instead of a regular uniform shirt.  The last Friday of every month will be Tag Day.  Bring $1 for the privilege of dressing out of uniform (jeans, etc.)

Planting our Garden

It may be hot outside, but we are working hard to plant vegetable seeds in our school garden.  We planted lettuce, carrots, peas, and sugar snap peas.  We hope to harvest our vegetables in the fall.

Fun with Math

Last week, we used our math manipulatives to demonstrate the concept of one more.  This activity prepared us to begin learning our addition facts.

Dates to remember:
Mon. Aug. 26                 Begin reading homework (usually 3 days each week) (Sign the sticky note in the book to verify that your child read the story aloud to you.)
Tues., Aug. 27               School picture day (Wear school uniforms.) (Return your order forms and payment.)
Thurs., Aug. 29             Larry’s Pizza Night (Join us for pizza and fun at Larry’s on Bowman Road from 5:00 to 8:00.  Teachers will be your servers.  You must present one ticket per person in order for CLS to get a percentage of your payment.)
Fri., Aug. 30                 First spelling test (Practice our 10 words at home.)
Fri., Aug. 30                 Tag day (Bring $1 for the privilege of dressing out of uniform.)

Our children will participate in Nature Club on Friday afternoons at 2:00.  Occasionally, I may need another adult to help with our activity.  Please let me know if you might be available some Fridays to help.  This Friday, Aug. 23, I will be working with small groups of children to plant seeds in the garden.  I need an adult or two to supervise the other children on the playground while they wait for their turn.  Please let me know if you can help.
